It is time for a REMATCH! Masaryk University hockey players will once again face off against the Mendel University team on Thursday, 14 October at 19:00 at the Winning Group Arena (Rondo) in Brno. Tickets can only be bought online at Ticketportal for CZK 190.
MU players are looking forward to seeing their fans in the stands. “It will be great to hear our MU mates cheer for us. But it also puts a lot of pressure on the players not to mess up and to do our best,” said Masaryk University team captain Pavel Tomaník.
For many players, this will be the first opportunity to show their skills in front of their classmates. “I am curious to see what composition the coaches choose for the team. A lot of the older guys who played for MU last time have already graduated, so there will be a lot of new players who will experience playing in front of the boisterous crowds of students from Brno universities,” explained the team captain. Still, he believes that the nervousness of the big game will not get under their skin.
MU hockey players will be pushed to win not only by the fans but also by their desire to avenge the humiliating 2:5 loss they suffered in November 2019. Back then the MU team did not start badly at all: it was leading 1:0, but MENDELU turned the game around with a series of quick goals and defended the lead to the end. The celebration of both universities’ centenary was thus a bit happier for the green-coloured MENDELU. “Yeah, we were quite upset that we couldn’t manage to close up the score a bit at least. That’s why we are very motivated to beat MENDELU this time round,” said Tomaník..
In addition to the ice hockey game itself, visitors to the arena can also look forward to a rich accompanying programme and a number of competitions. The Facebook event page offers additional details about the event.
Hockey duels between Brno universities are becoming a tradition and welcome addition to the academic year. The first-ever event of this kind was the Masaryk University vs. Brno University of Technology game in 2009. In the following years, this duel was repeated several times. In 2016, MU was challenged by Prague’s Charles University for a change, with almost eight thousand spectators attending. The year before last, MU faced off against MENDELU.
