Martin Bareš: I am pleased that Pavel Plevka, a distinguished scientist, a graduate of Charles University and Uppsala University, has accepted this challenging role.

Pavel Plevka focuses on structural biology, molecular medicine and research on the brain and the human mind at the Central European Institute of Technology. He is also a well-known science populariser and a recent recipient of the South Moravian Region Prize for 2022. He replaced Jiří Nantl as director of CEITEC MUNI.

Plevka received the official assignment to lead the scientific institution from MUNI Rector Martin Bareš at the end of June. Rector Bareš was also present at today’s official inauguration. “I am pleased and honoured that Pavel Plevka, a distinguished scientist, a graduate of Charles University and Uppsala University, has accepted this challenging role. It gives me confidence that CEITEC will continue on the path of becoming a recognised and competitive research institute not only in terms of South Moravia, the Czech Republic and Europe, but globally,” said Rector Bareš at the CEITEC premises.

Pavel Plevka, who has received a number of prestigious grants and awards in the past, hinted at his main goal for the coming period: “To strengthen the scientific reputation of CEITEC and Masaryk University by participating in international projects and improving the way we present our results to the global scientific community. An improved reputation will help us attract top scientific talent and ideally create a positive feedback loop leading to the production of excellent scientific results,” said Pavel Plevka.

He has previously admitted in an interview with M Magazine that combining the managerial position of director with the role of researcher is a personal challenge for him that will require discipline, flexibility and good organisation.
