This traditional art competition, the goal of which is to get ideas for Masaryk University’s New Year’s card, attracted many proposals. An expert jury selected the five best ones, and the University management subsequently chose the final design. Jana Nedomová, assistant professor at the department, led the students in the competition.
The winning New Year greeting card is the work of Mariana Michenková, a student of the Arts and Visual Arts for Education programme focusing on education. “My main goal was to create a simple and concise design that would be associated with the Christmas season and winter. I thought about what would bring about the Christmas spirit. I remembered the view from the window of snowflakes falling. That’s why I chose this motif. I thought it symbolized winter and the Christmas season perfectly. At the same time, I wanted the design to be close to Masaryk University. Later on, these two requirements interconnected when I thought of using individual letters from the logo of Masaryk University, which, when turned and copied, form varied and simple falling snowflakes,” said Mariana, who did not expect her design to succeed and is very happy about it. “I created several variants, and the chosen New Year's card was the last one I created. This confirmed that there are never enough design variants, and I am glad that this one caught the jury's attention,” she added.
The design will be elaborated and adapted for the needs of Masaryk University and its colours adjusted for use by all MU faculties.
However, the other proposals did not go without recognition. The Expert Jury Award for the design that most appealed to its members went to Sára Kalná, the Graphic Inspiration Award for the design that inspired use for a different purpose went to Alena Poláčková, and the MUNI Brand Manager Award went to Lenka Trtilová.
