Mendel Refectory hosted habilitation ceremony

The Mendel Refectory at the Old Brno Abbey saw on 30 November the habilitation ceremony of fifteen colleagues from six faculties who have earned the Czech academic degree of associate professors.

The habilitation ceremony took place in the Mendel Refectory.

All but two (Zdeněk Pecka from České Budějovice and Kristýna Solomon from Olomouc, respectively) associate professors work at MU’s faculties or other institutions. “You had to work hard and prioritise science over your personal interests,” said Vice-Rector Jiří Hanuš during the ceremony. According to him, the scope of the fields the candidates represented prove the academic diversity of Masaryk University which, aside from top-quality science, emphasises teaching and values of dignity, self-respect, tolerance and the ability to admit to one’s mistake. “Your new status is not just about high level of science, but also about sharing knowledge with new generation,“ Hanuš noted, hoping that they would act upon their conscience and cherish it. “You can celebrate today, all the responsibility starts tomorrow,” Hanuš quipped to amuse the friends, families and a handful of children of the candidates.

Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the recipients, Alena Damborská also mentioned families, children and friends who “suffered” while their loved ones “struggled with their dissertations, projects, computers, data storages, endless overtime and other obstacles on a daily basis”. She also thanked the university, colleagues and everyone involved in the habilitation process as such. Named after the Latin term docere (to teach), the degree is an obligation for its holders to motivate students to learning and to stir their interest in science. “We are also responsible for the further development of knowledge, for finding new solutions ensuring further development of science and the society in general. We used to be students, and our current role is that of our teachers. We have to assume the responsibility for the new generation of talented and motivated students who, fifteen years from now, will find themselves in our role,” said the neuroscientist in her commencement speech.
