More beds at dormitories: first-year students are a priority

Continuous improvement of comfort at dormitories has long been among MU’s long-term priorities. Last year the Mánesova dormitory underwent renovations of the interiors; this year the dormitory at bratří Žůrků saw the much needed layout upgrade.

“The situation has changed drastically. A few years ago the demand for our dormitories was lower. Nowadays we operate at full capacity. Our priority is to offer as many beds as possible to first-year students, as well as to renovate and build,” says Masaryk University Rector Martin Bareš. The number of beds assigned to first year students has increased from 750 to 1,170, with additional 32 beds as part of last-minute developments at the beginning of September. As for brand new buildings, MU’s five-year plan includes new accommodation for students at Vinařská and the Bohunice campus.

Recently finished is the renovation of the dormitory at Bratří Žůrků, with fifty-seven additional beds compared with the capacity prior to the renovation. New units with a double and a triple room are now available, with a shared spacious bathroom. Kitchenettes with appliances are available on each floor, as are spacious storage boxes for larger luggage, shoes and the like. The dormitory is within convenient distance from the Komárov tram terminus and the local cycling path. The premises also offer a sports ground and a smaller forested area. Masaryk University’s Sladkého dormitory is nearby as well, with newly renovated double room. Furniture upgrade is schedule for the Sladkého dormitory as well.

Rector Martin Bareš and newly elected chairman of the Students’ Chamber of the Academic Senate Dominik Levíček report on the progress of the extensive reconstruction of Kounicova Dormitory.

The management of the university represented by Rector Martin Bareš, Vice-Rectors Jana Fialová and Radim Polčák and the newly elected chairman of the Students’ Chamber of the Academic Senate Dominik Levíček visited the construction sites in Komárov and at the Kounicova dormitory at the end of the summer break.

“It is good to know that the university makes an effort to increase the number of beds and to upgrade its dormitories. From the perspective of students this is increasingly important due to the increasing rent prices on the real estate market. Students do need suitable environment ensuring good academic performance,” Levíček says.

The new rooms at Kounicova dormitory will be double rooms. All have a balcony and private bathroom.

Following the renovations, all rooms will be doubles with the private festival. Two double rooms with accessible bathrooms for Teiresiás students will be available on the first floor. The rooms have new partition walls and the building itself saw structural integrity upgrades. The second stage of the renovations will include an evacuation lift and interiors. All signs are pointing to scheduled completion of the renovations. MU will be able to offer almost 600 new beds as of the 2025/2026 academic year.

“I am satisfied with the outcomes of the renovations at the Kounicova dormitory. We will be able to offer higher standards of accommodation,” Bareš commented on the progress of the works.

Priced at CZK 250 million, the renovations of the Kounicova dormitory includes major construction works, structural integrity improvements, new layout of the interior and utilities, allowing each room to have its own en-suite toilet and bath.
