This year´s edition saw 268 more institutions participating than last year, further underlining the significance of MU´s achievement. Overall, MU received 8,585 points out of a possible 10,000.
Among Czech universities, MU placed second, right behind the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, which ranked 68th worldwide.
“The result in this year’s UI GreenMetric ranking is, above all, a confirmation of a long-term trend for us. Sustainability at Masaryk University is not a one-time project, but a process based on collaboration across the entire university – from the academic community to building management, residence halls, and dining services. After years of systematic effort, it is rewarding to see our work reflected in international comparisons,” said MU Vice-Rector for Lifelong Learning, Technology Transfer and Sustainability Monika Jandová.
MU´s Results in Individual Categories
The UI GreenMetric ranking evaluates universities based on 58 indicators across six categories – five related to practical environmental impact and one to education and research. MU achieved the following scores in each category:
- Setting and Infrastructure: 985 (out of 1,500)
- Energy and Climate Change: 1,750 (out of 2,100)
- Waste: 1,625 (out of 1,800)
- Water: 987.5 (out of 1,000)
- Transportation: 1,725 (out of 1,800)
- Education and Research: 1,512.5 (out of 1,800)
Compared to last year, MU improved its scores in four areas: Energy and Climate Change +125 points, Transportation +125 points, Water +88 points, and Waste +50 points. These results confirm a long-standing trend of systematic development in sustainability – from campus management and energy efficiency to educational projects and research initiatives.
The UI GreenMetric ranking is one of the most widely used global rankings in the field of sustainable development in higher education. It offers not only international comparison but also a structured framework for planning and monitoring development activities.
MU´s best-ever placement thus reflects the university´s growing emphasis on environmental responsibility, modern infrastructure management, and the involvement of students and staff in sustainability initiatives.
