What awaits Masaryk university in 2026

The year 2026 will be rich in events and exciting activities at Masaryk University for students, academics, and the general public alike. As early as Tuesday, 27 January, we will celebrate the 107th anniversary of the founding of the university, symbolically marking the beginning of another inspiring year.

JANUARY
107th anniversary of the founding of Masaryk university
The traditional gathering of the academic community, combined with the awarding of Masaryk university medals, will take place in the Great Hall of Karel Engliš at the Faculty of Law. This year’s anniversary will also include the opening of a travelling exhibition on the work of Míla Doleželová, held on the occasion of the transfer of the estate of this important painter into the Masaryk university collection.

Masaryk Days: security in a dangerous world

“In 2026, Masaryk university will once again organize a two-day event titled Masaryk Days to mark the anniversary of the birth of T. G. Masaryk. This year it will take place on 3–4 March under the theme Security in a dangerous world. The first day will be held at the Technical museum in Brno in connection with a new exhibition of photographs by Ladislav Sitenský, while the second day will take place in a Masaryk university building at Komenského Square in the form of a lecture series on the topic of security. Both Czech and international experts will give lectures. Among the guests of this year’s Masaryk days will be Nicholas Winton jr.,” said Jiří Hanuš, Vice-Rector for Personnel Policy and Academic and Cultural Affairs at Masaryk university.

APRIL
MUNI Sport Park: ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new MU sports complex
“MUNI Sport Park is a key piece of infrastructure for the Faculty of Sports Studies. Over recent years, the number of students at the faculty has increased by more than a third, and interest in our study programmes remains consistently high. The infrastructure will meet the needs of practical teaching both for faculty study programmes and for the University Sports Centre, which will certainly be appreciated by students of other Masaryk University faculties as well. The facilities are also being prepared for sports and physical activities for MU students, employees, and the general public. The planned complex also has potential for research activities, such as monitoring player load using GPS trackers and accelerometers, among others. The premises will also include facilities for practical teaching in sports physiotherapy. We are very much looking forward to the new complex,” said Jan Cacek, Dean of the Faculty of Sports Studies at Masaryk university.

MAY
MUNI RUN
A university run not only for employees and students, but for everyone who enjoys physical activity. Competitions are held in both adult and children’s categories.

MUNI DAY
An informal gathering of all Masaryk University employees and students. A day packed with sports as well as accompanying cultural and educational programmes.
“MUNI RUN and MUNI DAY serve to connect people and build community across Masaryk University. One of the major highlights of MUNI DAY will once again be the floorball derby CAMPUS vs. CITY between a team representing the Rector’s Office and city-centre faculties and a team of campus faculties,” said Petr Suchý, Vice-Rector for Internationalization and External Relations at Masaryk University.

Dies academicus
A traditional academic ceremony connected with the awarding of the Rector’s Awards and Masaryk University medals, as well as an exhibition of academic insignia.

JULY
Mendel Festival
A festival of music, science, and inspiration featuring concerts, lectures, and a programme for children. Vice-Rector Suchý added: “The Mendel Festival, held for the second time also at the Bohunice Campus, will recall the legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel through its rich programme, present Masaryk University, and introduce its educational and research activities to the wider public in Brno and beyond, across all age groups. And, as has become a good tradition, it will also offer an attractive music programme.”

SEPTEMBER
Night of Science
A Europe-wide event in which Masaryk University faculties and departments also participate by opening their laboratories, lecture halls, and classrooms to the public for one night.

MUNI BioPharma Hub – Launch of Operations
“In 2026, Masaryk University will put the MUNI BioPharma Hub infrastructure into operation, which will become a new centre of excellence for education and research in pharmacy, molecular biology, and biotechnology. The completion of this strategic project will provide modern facilities for the Faculty of Pharmacy while also connecting top-level teaching with innovative technologies. In addition to the Faculty of Pharmacy, other leading units such as the Preclinical Centre and the Centre for Molecular Medicine will be based here, with the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Medicine, and CEITEC MU also active on site. Thanks to this infrastructure, the university will be able to educate experts for many key professions and strengthen its role on the European scientific map. From the very beginning, the project has emphasized sustainability and technological sophistication – from energy-efficient architecture and the use of geothermal boreholes to intelligent building management. The relocation of the Faculty of Pharmacy to these state-of-the-art facilities represents a significant step toward fulfilling the university’s vision of connecting education with top-level research and creating an environment that will inspire both scientists and students,” described MU Bursar David Póč.

OCTOBER
Opening of the academic year and announcement of the University Wine
The ceremonial opening of the academic year is traditionally linked with the presentation of the Rector’s Awards, Masaryk university medals, and the announcement of the University Wine.

NOVEMBER
Open Day
A special university-wide open day during which individual faculties are presented to prospective students by the students themselves. During a single day, it is possible to visit up to three faculties.

Commemorative gathering of the MU academic community
At a traditional commemorative assembly held at the Kounic Halls complex, the academic community regularly remembers imprisoned, tortured, and executed members of the Masaryk university academic community and other victims of Nazi terror.

Fragile Freedom
A debate and cultural programme marking the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in 1989, when our country gained freedom and the opportunity for independent national development.

Brno’s seventeenth
The November events of 1939 and 1989 are commemorated by an event organized by students of five Brno universities: Masaryk university, the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts, Mendel University in Brno, Brno University of Technology, and the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno.

Books in Brno
Munipress Publishing House and the Masaryk University Cultural Centre, in cooperation with the Moravian Library, are organizing the fourth annual Advent book fair and literary festival.
