Universities stand together: an emergency fundraiser for a university in Kyiv, Ukraine

Universities are not only places of education. They are also communities of people who are able to support one another even in the most difficult times. Right now, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv – one of Ukraine’s most important universities – needs our support. It has reached out to Czech universities with a request for help.

“At the beginning of 2026, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the wider Ukrainian academic community have faced an unprecedented escalation of humanitarian and infrastructural challenges. Our students and staff are confronting relentless disruptions: their daily lives, education, and research have been continuously affected by barbaric attacks on civilians and critical energy infrastructure in extreme winter conditions, leaving people without heating and electricity in freezing temperatures and severely threatening the safety and wellbeing of the entire academic community,” described the current situation in a letter requesting support to maintain operations and protect students and staff, Rector of the Kyiv university Volodymyr Bugrov.

Palacký University Olomouc (UPOL), in cooperation with the organization Memory of Nations, has therefore launched a public fundraiser to purchase specific aid: a diesel power generator KJ POWER KJA110 (110 kVA). This generator will make it possible for teaching, research, and the basic operation of the university in Kyiv to continue even during prolonged power outages and under exceptionally demanding winter conditions.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has been hit by extremely cold weather, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. At the same time, Russia is systematically attacking critical infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity, water, and heating. The situation remains worst in Kyiv, from where hundreds of thousands of residents have temporarily left due to these conditions. In such a reality, securing basic energy is a matter of survival.

Masaryk University is joining UPOL’s initiative and supporting it by spreading information about the fundraiser. Together, let us send warmth and light to places where they are now missing.

Every contribution helps!
The generator can be sent to Kyiv within the next few days.
Join us and become part of this support.

The Energy for the University in Kyiv fundraiser runs until February 25. You can follow it and contribute here.
