Masaryk University statement on the draft law on registration of entities with foreign ties

Proposed law on foreign ties threatens international cooperation.

The leadership of Masaryk University is acutely aware of current security threats, including various forms of influence operations – not least in the context of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

However, the concept of the proposed law on the registration of entities with foreign ties fails to address these threats. On the contrary, it creates an unjustified risk of serious top-down interference in the rights and freedoms that form the foundation of a democratic state governed by the rule of law, an open knowledge society and a market economy. International cooperation – which this proposal could significantly undermine – is also essential for our teaching, research and public service.

For these reasons, the leadership of Masaryk University considers the proposal incompatible with the values, principles and traditions on which our university is built and which are also directly linked to the freedom, sovereignty and prosperity of our nation and the Czech Republic.
