The recipients were selected on the basis of the successful completion of their doctoral studies during the standard four-year period, plus no more than one year, combined with excellent outcomes of their research as reflected in their dissertation.
“In the case of graduates in natural science and medical fields of study, for example, the recipients include in particular graduates with original publications in the top quartile of the top-quality journals in the respective fields,” Pospíšilová explained. The criteria for the award recipients are also based on the Principles for effective and quality doctoral studies at Masaryk University, a series of principles on which the entire process of transformation of doctoral studies at MU is based.
Vice-rector Pospíšilová presented the awards for the first time last year, and she plans to acknowledge the achievements of successful doctoral programme graduates and their supervisors on an annual basis. “The main goal of the award is to motivate current students in doctoral programmes towards the completion of their studies during the standard time period, and with top-quality results. Acknowledging those who have managed to do so is among the series of activities by the university aiming to increase the quality of doctoral studies,” Pospíšilová added. The award carries a financial prize of CZK 25,000 for the student as well as the supervisor.
Masaryk University considers doctoral studies as a pillar of a well-functioning university. It fosters its development and strives for its quality, to ensure among other things that the graduates succeed in their scientific careers as well as outside of the academic sector. Students in doctoral programmes have the opportunity to get involved in unique courses and workshops aimed in particular at the so-called soft skills under the auspices of MUNI PhD Academia, a concept of development of doctoral programme students beyond their actual studies.
