Frezer Getachew Asfaw loves beer and football.

Frezer Getachew Asfaw arrived in Brno in October 2023. He is studying for a master’s degree in software systems and services management at the Faculty of Informatics, supported by a scholarship from the Czech government. So far, his experience in the Czech Republic has been entirely positive – both academically and personally.

Frezer chose to study in the Czech Republic because it offers high-quality education at an affordable cost. “That really makes a difference compared with other European countries. Another important factor for me was safety; the Czech Republic is one of the safest countries in Europe. And Masaryk University impressed me with its academic reputation, modern facilities, and supportive international environment,” says Frezer.

Before coming to Brno, Frezer had already gained international experience through a study placement at Chin Shiny High School in China. “That opportunity gave me valuable life skills and encouraged me to further pursue my studies abroad.”

He is now in the second year of his master’s programme. He chose software systems and services management because he enjoys combining the technical and managerial aspects of software systems and believes it will give him a strong foundation for his future career.

“I really enjoy my studies. The environment is stimulating, the teachers are experienced and approachable, and there are plenty of opportunities to grow – not just academically but also personally. I’m very happy with my decision to study here,” Frezer says, praising the atmosphere at Masaryk University.

One of the things he appreciates most about life in the Czech Republic is the excellent and reliable public transport – safe, convenient, and a big help in everyday life. “And I’ve also grown fond of Czech beer. I often joke that it’s so smooth it almost tastes like milk! It’s just one of the unique cultural experiences I’ve come to appreciate.”

Frezer plays football for the Sokol Lažany club.

In his free time, Frezer plays football professionally for the Sokol Lažany club. “I’m amazed by how many high-quality football pitches there are here – it adds another dimension to my life in the Czech Republic and helps me maintain an active and balanced lifestyle.”

He also enjoys Brno’s student life, especially the student parties, which he sees as a great way to unwind and meet new people. “The international community in Brno is very friendly, so I feel more at home here. If there’s one thing I still haven’t fully adjusted to, it would be the colder winters – but everything else has made up for it,” he says with a smile.

Frezer adds that the Masaryk University community makes him feel welcome and supported in the Czech Republic. “I’m also grateful to the Czech government for the opportunity to study here, and to my teachers at the Faculty of Informatics for their valuable guidance throughout my journey.”
