The planned shutdown of the district heating system, which will result in an interruption of the hot water supply at Kounicova dormitory from Tuesday, August 25 at 7 p.m. until Monday, August 31 at noon, is being carried out by Teplárny Brno. The Masaryk University Accommodation and Catering Services (ACS MU) has no influence over the situation.
The extensive shutdown is necessary due to the relocation of a DN 500 district heating pipeline on Chodská Street, in the Czech Army complex. The disruption will affect several dozen streets in Brno’s Královo Pole and Žabovřesky districts.
Around 280 students are currently staying at Kounicova dormitory during the summer period, most of whom are international students. All students have already been informed about the situation by ACS MU management via a mass email.
“Throughout the entire outage, students staying at Kounicova can use the sanitary facilities at Náměstí Míru dormitory, where hot-water showers will be available. These students will be allowed to enter the residence hall using their ISIC card or, alternatively, a temporary access card,” explained Renata Pavlicová, Head of Accommodation Services at ACS MU. She added that Náměstí Míru dormitory can be reached by direct bus No. 68 from the Klusáčkova stop.
Kounicova dormitory, with a capacity of 594 places exclusively in double rooms, reopened last September following an extensive two-year renovation. It will begin accepting students for the new 2026/2027 academic year on Tuesday, September 1, from noon. Students who will be staying at Veveří dormitory can also pick up the keys to their rooms at Kounicova from accommodation officer Anna Ficová.
