Statement of the Rector’s Board of Masaryk University of 1 November 2022
The Rector’s Board of Masaryk University – at a time between the anniversary of the foundation of independent Czechoslovakia and the anniversary of the events of November of 1939 and 1989, and being mindful of the legacy of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk – addresses all members of the academia, students, and employees of the university with the following statement and appeal
The Rector’s Board of Masaryk University
• expresses its deepest concern over the growing number of acts of intolerance and hatred currently seen not only in the Czech society, and calls on public officials to treat these events seriously and with full responsibility;
• strongly condemns any acts of hatred, aggression, and violence, especially towards minorities, be they minorities in terms of nationality, ethnicity, religion, social status, sexual orientation, or otherwise (the recent murder in Slovakia is particularly alarming in this sense);
• calls on all members of the academia, employees, and students of Masaryk University to remain alert with regard to all dangers of populism and nationalism, trivialization of the public discourse and misinformation and verbal attacks against minorities, as well as to be generally alert with respect to all events and steps which undermine freedoms at their foundation – as this is one of the social roles and responsibilities of universities as public institutions;
• expresses its deepest belief that any modern democratic and open society must respect and defend the ideas, values, and principles of humanity; as one of the fundamental roles of the academic environment is to provide for a free forum for open discussion, free exchange of opinions and mutual respect;
• refers to a key thought of philosopher Karl Popper, according to which unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance; and if we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, the tolerance itself will be destroyed;
• calls on the members of the academia of Masaryk University to be aware of the aforementioned facts at all times and to act accordingly.

Заява колегії ректора Університету Масарика від 1 листопада 2022 року
Колегія ректора Масарикового університету – у часі між річницею створення незалежної Чехословацької держави та ювілеями листопада 1939 та листопада 1989 року та пам’яттю про спадщину духовного батька нашого університету Т. Г. Масарика – звертається до всіх членів академічної спільноти, всіх студенток і студентів і всіх співробітників університету з наступною заявою і закликом.
Колегія ректора
• висловлює глибоку заклопотаність з приводу зростаючих проявів нетерпимості та нетерпимості, які зараз можна спостерігати не лише в чеському суспільстві, і закликає громадськість ставитися до цих явищ з усією серйозністю та відповідальністю;
• рішуче засуджує будь-які прояви ненависті, агресії чи насильства, особливо щодо меншин, національні, етнічні, релігійні, соціальні, сексуальні чи інші (недавній напад вбивці в Словаччині дуже насторожує);
• закликає всіх членів академічної спільноти, співробітників та студентів Масарика бути уважними до небезпеки популізму та націоналізму, до баналізації публічних дебатів та дезінформації або вербальних нападів на меншини, а в цілому насторожити всім явищам та діям, які загрожують свободі та суспільній відповідальності в цьому університеті.
• висловлює свою глибоку переконаність у тому, що кожне сучасне демократичне і відкрите суспільство повинно шанувати і захищати гуманітарні ідеали, цінності і принципи; однією з головних функцій академічного поля є створення вільного середовища, відкритої дискусії, вільного обміну думками і взаємної поваги;
• у зв'язку з цим він посилається на важливу ідею філософа Карла Поппера про те, що необмежена толерантність призводить до зникнення толерантності; і що якщо необмежена толерантність буде поширена на нетерпимість, то сама толерантність буде знищена;
• закликає членів академічної спільноти Університету Масарика постійно нагадувати про ці факти і діяти відповідно до них.
