“I am honoured to have been appointed by the president as rector of Masaryk University, and I am glad that we will enter my second term with the best position in the international QS World University Rankings in our history and also as the most successful institution in the Czech Republic in obtaining funds from the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programmes. Similarly, the ever-increasing number of ERC Grants fills me with the feeling that at Masaryk University we are working with an emphasis on quality and are addressing truly important topics. I would like to continue on the path of top-quality education, which we provide at all ten faculties within the broad spectrum of the University, because I consider quality education to be a clear advantage for the employability of our students on the labour market,” said Rector Martin Bareš.
The election was held on 3 April in the Karel Engliš Auditorium at the MU Faculty of Law. The rector is elected by secret ballot by the MU Academic Senate, which has a total of 55 members, including 22 students. The Academic Senate elected Rector Martin Bareš, awarding him 51 votes.
Martin Bareš is a professor of neurology. Before becoming rector for the first time in 2019, he served as vice-rector and dean of the MU Faculty of Medicine. In his candidacy speech, he evaluated how MU went through the unprecedented coronavirus crisis, praised the establishment and activities of the MUNI Helps Volunteer Centre, and recalled the return of the Faculty of Pharmacy under MU’s wing and the launch of the Simulation Centre.
“In my second term of office, I would also like to continue developing excellent science and research, internationalization, and sustainability, because in my opinion this is the way to bring Masaryk University even closer to the best universities in the world,” added Rector Martin Bareš after being appointed by the president.
