Masaryk University was ranked in the 601–650 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings thanks to a year-on-year improvement in its score across four of the five assessed areas.

What role do universities play in a fast-changing world? What awaits Masaryk University in the new academic year? And how important are the people who make up the university for its success? These are some of the topics that ran through the ceremonial opening of the 2026/2027 academic year, held in the hall of Besední dům.

Rector Martin Bareš gave the following speech at the ceremonial opening of the 2026/2027 academic year, held in the early evening of 29 September 2026.

Student accommodation is one of Masaryk University’s long-term priorities. One of the steps towards its further development was to gather feedback from the students themselves. MU conducted a university-wide survey amongst residents with the aim of gathering suggestions for improving services in halls of residence.

Masaryk University’s Faculty of Education will be led by its current dean, Simona Koryčánková, for another term. In a secret ballot held by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Education, Koryčánková received 17 votes. Her opponent, historian Marie Koldinská, received 3 votes.

How can Czech and Ukrainian universities further develop their cooperation, and what can they learn from one another even as the war continues? These were among the main topics discussed during a visit to Ukraine by the management of Masaryk University.

The latest edition of the international UI GreenMetric sustainability ranking places Masaryk University (MU) 97th in the world out of 2,016 universities assessed.

Five emeritus professors from three of Masaryk University’s founding faculties – Arts, Science and Law – came together at a ceremony recognising their many years of work and contribution to the university. They received their appointment certificates from Rector Martin Bareš, joined by the deans of the professors’ faculties.

The International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) has commended Masaryk University’s development of research infrastructure, success in securing grants, and ongoing reforms in doctoral education. In its final report, the board also recommended further support for international mobility, the expansion of sabbatical opportunities for researchers, and a more systematic approach to building the university’s international reputation.

The traditional summer tour of the halls of residence, which is regularly attended by the management of Masaryk University and members of the MU Academic Senate, including the student chamber, has once again confirmed the need for further investment in student accommodation this year.  

Researcher Monika Brusenbauch Meislová has won the UACES Mid-Career Research Excellence Award 2026. UACES presented this award for research excellence in European studies for the very first time this year.

Masaryk University and the Czech Ministry of Health aim to jointly develop the training of non-physician healthcare professionals. The new memorandum supports lifelong learning and modern teaching methods, and is intended to facilitate the transfer of research findings into teaching and clinical practice.
