Commemorating the anniversary of the birth of the first Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in March, Masaryk University organises Masaryk Days which, through lectures, discussions and cultural events, refer to the legacy of the president and strive for the reflection of the pressing social issues.
Due to rising prices of energy and inflation, Masaryk University has been forced to increase dormitory fees for the second time in a short time span. However, in order to reduce the economic impact of this measure on students, the MU management has decided not to increase the dormitory fees as much as the increased energy prices and inflation would otherwise warrant.
On 16 February, the Scala University Cinema was temporarily closed for safety reasons. However, on Monday 27 February, the centre of social life that has been run by MU for ten years again opens its doors to visitors interested in film screenings, courses, lectures and other performances. Masaryk University decided to reopen the cinema based on information received from Brno City Hall, the owner of the premises.
When the war in Ukraine started a year ago, Masaryk University immediately responded to the situation and started providing assistance to Ukrainian students, employees and their families through the MUNI HELPS Volunteer Centre and other means. The Scala University Cinema and Bolek Polívka Theatre will be temporarily closed with immediate effect until at least 24 February. The decision to close was made based on a structural engineer’s assessment of the building’s structural integrity in connection with the upcoming renovation of Bolek Polívka Theatre.
Waste is among the negative impacts on the environment. Masaryk University attempts to reduce the production of waste and, at the same time, to increase the proportion of recyclable waste. The management of the university has approved the Strategy for sustainable waste management and prevention of waste production.
