The Czech legal system does not keep pace with the development of the cyberspace, and we are thus facing the challenge of applying the existing criminal-law regulations to the field. These issues were agreed on by the participants of the Law and Cyberspace workshop held at Masaryk University's Faculty of Law. Opportunities brought by the cyberspace are often being misused for major criminal activities such as distribution of child pornography, while the police often lack sufficient methods of preventing these problems.

A new student project at the Institute of Information and Library Studies of Faculty of Arts tries to show that reading is sexy, cool and trendy. Guerrilla Readers comprises seven students. Six women and one man will try to bring young people back to reading. They would like to do this by so-called guerrilla marketing – in unusual, suprising and amusing way.

Integration of environmental information from the whole of Europe – this was the motto of a conference called Towards eEnvironment, held in Prague in March 2009 by Masaryk University. Almost four hundred specialists from all over the world discussed a shared information system, which will support not only progressive changes in the field of environmental information but will also develop effective communication within the European Community.

Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology have agreed on the next step in the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) project. The main aim of the project is to create excellent conditions for the development of biotechnology, biomedicine, advanced materials and technology. The general agreement – signed by the Rectors of both universities on 3 March 2009 – makes Masaryk University the main recipient of a grant and establishes equal partnership between Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology in project preparation.

A new permanent exhibition devoted to the world-famous "father of genetics" Gregor Johann Mendel, was opened by the Mendel Museum of Masaryk University in the middle of February 2009 in the grounds of the Abbey of the Order of St. Augustine in Brno, where Mendel - scientist and monk - made his epoch-making discoveries. This modern exhibition intends in particular to attract children and young people to Mendel's legacy.

Procedures, systems and technologies to improve early warning against natural disasters and crisis management in the course of disasters – these were the main topics of a symposium held in Prague in January 2009. The scientists present decided on a "Prague Declaration", which summarized conclusions on how better to collect, coordinate, connect and evaluate data from terrestrial, overhead and space stations and how to use these data in the efficient protection of populations against natural disasters.

One of the participants of the Cyberspace 2008 Conference was Vit Sisler, an associate professor from Charles University in Prague. His research main topic is questions of contemporary Islamic law, the relation between Islam and digital media and political aspects of computer games.
